Researchers turn to new stories, which allow them to reconsider earlier conclusions, to correct long-established ideas about the events. An example of such a plot is the story of the Duke of Burgundy Jean the Fearless confessing his guilt in the murder of the brother of King Charles VI of France, Louis of Orleans on November 23, 1407. The Chronicle of the Monk of Saint-Denys is one of the main documents addressing this issue. This article is devoted to finding the source on the basis of
which the author of the Chronicle, Michel Pintoin, described the confession, and determining the degree of reliability of the source in view of the fact that later Jean the Fearless himself denied his involvement in the murder. It is concluded that the only witnesses to the confession were the Dukes Louis of Anjou and Jean of Berry, but neither of them can be considered Pintoin’s informant, and he himself was not a direct witness. It has been established that the Chronicle was written after 1410, and that Michel Pintoin used as his source for the confession a letter dated July 14, 1411, written by the sons of the murdered Louis of Orléans and based on the account of John, Duke of Berry, the only surviving witness.

Keywords: Michel Pintoin, Duke Louis of Orleans, Duke John of Berry, crime in the Middle Ages, witchcraft, magic.

Bibliography

Orlenko O. Е.
