Troops were sent by states of the Rhine Confederation, such as the Kingdom of Bavaria, the Kingdom of Saxony and the Kingdom of Württemberg, as well as by the Kingdom of Prussia and the Austrian Empire, (the latter states were not members of the Confederation). Among these states, Prussia is of particular interest for a number of reasons. Firstly, a large part of those Prussian corps made their way home from Russia. The survivors’ memoirs became the basis for many enduring ideas about this campaign. Secondly, Prussia’s subsequent role as the center of the movement for the liberation of Germany from French rule in the Liberation Wars of 1813–1815 was of great importance. In the future, this period would be entrenched in German historical memory as a key milestone in the formation of national self-awareness. Thirdly, the implementation of the Lesser Germany variant of German unification increased the influence of Prussian historical memory on the formation of common German ideas about the events of the early 19th century. In this regard, the Prussian narratives are of particular value for the formation of common German ideas about the Russian campaign of 1812.

Based on the histories of individual regiments of the Kingdom of Prussia, and then of the German Empire, the article attempts to analyze the image of the Russian campaign of 1812 that developed in Prussia in the 19th century. It looks into the perception of this campaign by the Prussian military, highlighting the main themes that persisted in the memory of the campaign’s participants and the recurring conclusions. The perception of the reasons for the participation of the Prussian military contingent in the campaign and the assessment of its results are considered. Many narratives associated with this episode of German military history tend to reappear across various sources.

Keywords: Prussia, Russian campaign of 1812, retreat of the Grand Army, Napoleon, historical memory, regimental history.

Bibliography

Datsenko P.
