An analysis of Russian historiography leads to the conclusion that the academic historical literature has not paid significant attention to the career dynamics of judges of the pre-reform era. We base the research on the biography of State Councilor Trifon Filippovich Untilov, a native of the Kherson Governorate, who served in eight provinces of Russia and, at the end of his career, occupied the position of Chairman of the Chamber of Criminal and Civil Court of the Voronezh Governorate, was taken as an example of career dynamics. Three stages can be distinguished in the career of T. F. Untilov: 1. Official of city and provincial institutions, including an employee of the prosecutor’s office and a judge; 2. Provincial prosecutor; 3. Chairman of the Judicial Chamber. In the pre-reform period, prosecution officers were one of the main sources of judicial personnel in the provinces of the Russian Empire. A judicial career rarely developed within a single province. Typically, career advancement entailed service in several provinces of the empire. However, in the pre-reform period, judicial mobility was still lower than that of judges after the 1864 reform. The methodological basis of this study was formed by both general and specific methods of scientific inquiry, such as structural analysis, historical-comparative, historical-systemic, formal-logical, and others. The results of this study can be used in research and teaching courses related to the study of the history of the judiciary in the Russian Empire.

Keywords: Voronezh Governorate, provincial prosecutor, pre-reform court, criminal and civil court chambers, prosecutor’s office, 1864 judicial reform, judicial corps, Trifon Filippovich Untilov, Kherson Governorate, bureaucracy.

Bibliography

Abazov A.
