Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n

This article examines A. P. Chekhov\u2019s collection Sakhalin Island from the perspective of the author\u2019s value system, as reflected in the world depicted in the work. Chekhov’s book is examined using motif analysis, hermeneutic, and axiological approaches. The value oppositions are derived from persistent motifs actualized in the narrative. The set of images and characters recreated in the world of the book are interpreted within the spiritual and value opposition of \u201cculture vs. lack of culture.\u201d The \u201cculture\u201d position is built on the motifs of the narrator\u2019s spiritual quest and self-determination, loneliness and solitude, selflessness, and service to duty. The \u201clack of culture\u201d position encompasses motifs of injustice and tyranny, cruelty and self-affirmation at the expense of others, vulgarity and rudeness, and moral and physical impurity. The world of the work is marked by horizontal movement \u2014\u201cisland-like,\u201d in a closed circle \u2014 and vertical movement \u2014 into the realm of the spirit. The motifs of freedom and homecoming, and the associated toposes of the mountain, lighthouse, sea, and home, are most significant in the \u201cup\u201d position.<\/p>\n
