Abstract. The article clarifies the definition and linguistic status of coding, which is regarded as a linguopoetic category that manifests itself in literary texts by means of mono-, bi-, poly- and multicoding. The observations of the author of the article are realized on the material extracted from Russian non-realistic fiction texts of the 19th–21st centuries of various literary trends: romanticism, fantasy, steampunk, as well as their Russian-language translations. The article employed such methods of research as description, observation, semantic
decoding, as well as semantic, lexical, linguocognitive, linguocultural, discursive types of analysis, which contributed to the identification of the properties of coding as a special linguistic category. They allowed us to establish that the verbalizers of the category of coding in fiction are, on the one hand, usual linguistic means: background semantics and derived meanings of lexemes, internal forms of words and phraseological phrases, anthroponyms, paremiae of different typology, and on the other hand — tropes, figures and various artistic techniques: oxymorons, comparisons; metaphors, including cognitive; personifications, synesthetic units, intertextual, including hypertextual, inclusions. In artistic texts they reveal linguocultural, linguocognitive, medialinguistic, translatological (linguotranslation) potential, all of these used with consideration for the author’s individual representation of the cultural-linguistic code in a number of discursive varieties: religious, folklore, mythological, everyday routine, romantic, realistic, naive, political, sports, professional, advertising, etc. The signs of the of coding as a linguopoetic category, which is understood by the author of the article as a property of any literary text containing implicit conceptual and subtextual information, are non-obviousness of encrypted meanings; openness for their replenishment with subject-thematic varieties and artistic concepts, participation in world modeling.
