Abstract. The paper considers the main stages of formation of historical regional studies as an independent scientific discipline. The authors show the relevance and high interest of the professional community to regional studies in their historical perspective, and the need to supplement the economic-geographical studies of the regions of the Russian Federation with historical content (researchers saw the need in the 18th–20th centuries). The article considers the process of formation of historical regional studies and shows the interrelation of theoretical ideas and their practical realization in separate regions, as well as the connection of certain scientific directions in different subject areas, such as economics, geography, politics and political science, history and literature, culture and religion, which in each region have their specific features and mutual influence. The authors define historical regional studies as an independent scientific discipline and substantiate the prospects for developing historical and regional studies as interdisciplinary research.
Keywords: region, historical regional studies, regional research, local history, historical regional studies, zoning, regional geography, history of regional economy, cartography.
