Abstract. The article deals with the functioning of mythological neologisms in contemporary mass media and “new media.” We reveal certain features in the ways features of the mythological layer reappear in media texts. The article substantiates the possibility of including mythological neologisms in a media text that tends to be imaginative and allusive. Examples of mythological neologisms from publications in mass media and “new media” are given. The following methods were applied in the study of mythological neologisms: survey, based on which the neologisms relevant for the study were identified; component analysis, which allows us to determine the elements of the semantic core that forms the basis for metaphorical transfer; contextual analysis, which provides an opportunity to obtain connotative semes to fully reveal the meaning of a mythological neologism. The article briefly touches upon the specifics of word formation of mythological neologisms. On the basis of the study, we conclude that linguistic units of this type can create a new mythology and expand the lexical composition of media discourse and new media. The relevance of the research is due to insufficient study of the lexical stratum. The purpose of our article is to analyze the neologisms published in mass media and “new media,” where we can find a mythological component. The subject of the study is the characterization of the specificity of mythological neologisms. The practical significance of the research is determined by the possibility of applying the results of the study in the disciplines “Modern Russian Language” ( “Lexicology” section), “Russian Language and Culture of Speech,” “Medialinguistics,” “Textology of Mass Media,” etc.

Keywords: lexical neologization, media discourse, mythological lexicon, mythological neologisms, neomythonyms, new media, mass media.
