Abstract. In academic literature, Russian coffer centers of the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries are divided into two categories: large and regional ones. However, it is obvious that this classification is insufficient. The article highlights a third category: local coffer centers. Their main distinguishing features are that they serve a “niche” market, have extremely small production scales, are not represented at exhibitions, and have an indistinct style in their products. One of the local centers of Russian chest production was the handicraft industry of the Ryazan Governorate, in particular in the districts of Yegoryevsk, Kasimov, and Ryazan. The aim of the study was to provide a general description of the chest-making industry in the Ryazan Governorate as a local production center. New information is introduced into scientific circulation, and specific products are analyzed. The research material consists of objects from state museums in the Ryazan Region and private collections. The results can be used in educational courses and in organizing exhibitions.
