Abstract. The action of the novels of modern British writer Rose Tremain Restoration and Music and Silence is set in the 17th century in the Baroque era, characterized by emblematic thinking. The emblem is a genre associated with a symbolic perception of the world, a kind of intellectual game, designed to help a person in comprehending life. The purpose of this article is to study the specifics of the representation of emblematic thinking on the example of the named works of Tremaine, to analyze its influence on the plot components, the personalities of the main characters, and the development of their characters. As a result, the levels of manifestation of emblematic thinking in Tremain’s works are outlined. It is established that this author’s work is characterized by an ambivalent, playful view of things, which forces the reader to be actively involved in the interpretation of the text.
