Abstract. The article shows the transformation of Ryazhsk Ostrog (fortress) into a penitentiary prison. The relevance of the study lies in a detailed study of the history of one of the ancient cities of central Russia, Ryazhsk, in the context of the changing functions of the defense mechanism of the Moscow State. Several periods of the Ostrog’s evolution are distinguished: its construction as a defensive structure in the middle of the XVI century; transformation into Ryazhsk urban settlement with its socio-cultural population; loss of strategic importance after the expansion of the state borders and obtaining the status of a province of Pereyaslavl-Ryazan vice-governorate; by the middle of the 17th century, transformation of one of the internal Ostrog buildings into a prison hut with subordination to the vice governor, and in the 18th century — the final reorganization into a prison due to changes in geopolitical and political situation in
the region. The article presents episodes of national practice, with which the activities of the Ryazhsk prison were connected — the detention of political criminals and prisoners of war. The study has a broad scope: from local history research in archival materials to the history of the penitentiary system in the context of studying legislative acts in conjunction with examples from the region.
Keywords: legislative acts, penitentiary system, Ryazhsk, Ryazhsk prison.
