Abstract. The archival documents of 1884–1885, published for the first time, contain new data on one of the key stages in the life of the famous statesman P. A. Stolypin. At that time, he completed his education at St. Petersburg University, began public service and married O. B. Neidgart. The presented materials show how young Stolypin, faced with university restrictions on marriage, consciously chose the path of public service. This step not only defined his future career, but also laid the foundations of a system of values where family and service to the Fatherland formed an organic unity.

Keywords: P. A. Stolypin, official, university student, St. Petersburg University, O. B. Neidgart.
