Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the awareness of life values by the characters in M. M. Prishvin’s short novel Ginseng. The relevance of this research is due to the lack of coverage of Darwinian studies on philosophical issues related to establishing connections between individuals and the outside world, as illustrated in the tale of Ginseng. The purpose of this article is to emphasize ‘Moscow’ and ‘Eastern’ approaches to understanding the truth, which are combined in pursuit of the main character’s cherished wife and happiness. The novelty of the article relates to clarifying the relationship between Western and Eastern concepts in the spiritual quest of the main character’s work and the parallels between human, animal and plant life processes in the context of Prishvinsky’s works. The ‘Moscow’ wisdom, as a special life experience of Western people, is highlighted in the story based on the perceptions of the main characters by Louvain and other Chinese reindeer herders.

The conclusion states that in this story Prishvin focused on the issue of universal life values, which a person acquires through learning the secrets of nature and social upheavals, and this interaction can’t be completed in its essence. The results of the research can be used in a detailed study of Ginseng, as well as other works by Prishvin and in teaching activities.
