The theme of the Schism and its influence on people’s lives in A. N. Tolstoy’s novel Peter the First
AbstractThe theme of the Russian Church Schism in A. N. Tolstoy’s novel “Peter the First” has not attracted many researchers’ interest, and this fact determines the relevance of the present study. The role of the religious and ritual side of life is connected with the broader problem of its influence on the lives of individuals and entire Russia. The subject of the research is not only the spiritual issues that were an integral part of the life of the Russian nation, but also the personages themselves, representatives of common peasantry, when they are forced to flee into the woods. The writer’s attention is also focused on these characters’ social and everyday problems. The results of the analysis confirm that Tolstoy did not merely depict the historical layer of a specific historical era. Through the period, he addresses deep spiritual issues that arose as a result of Patriarch Nikon’s reforms and involved social and political consequences. These themed helped the novelist to comprehend conflicts in Russian society that were not limited to the reign of Peter the Great, but also in the 20th century. The results of this research confirm that the spiritual and ecclesiastical aspects of Russian life are depicted by A. N. Tolstoy with great mastery, deep understanding, expressively and emotionally. The article concludes that this Russian novelist was able to reliably show the complex social and spiritual situation in the past of our country, as well as to draw attention to the positive aspirations of the young Tsar in his attempt to stabilize the order in all spheres of national life.
