Abstract. The article discusses metaphors in political rhetoric and the way they make a certain impact on the audience and convey the key ideas of the speakers. The relevance of this study is due to the influence of political metaphors on the formation of public opinion; the use of metaphor in political discourse in order to influence the audience; the interest of linguists in the study of political metaphors to explore the subtleties of language and its interaction with culture and ideology.

The object of the study is speeches of Russian politicians (V. V. Putin, S. V. Lavrov, D. S. Peskov) in modern mass media. The subject of the study is political metaphors in their speech. The purpose of the study is to analyze the place and role of political metaphors in modern media text and its impact on the formation of public opinion. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the selection and analysis of media materials from year 2023. As a result, the connection between historical events and the most common metaphors in the language of mass media was determined.

According to the results obtained, the most frequent metaphors in the speeches of the politicians under study are metaphors related to the social life of society. It is emphasized that sociomorphic metaphors are means of purposeful influence on the recipients, changing their views or beliefs, forming certain opinions and assessments, better understanding of complex political and social problems, forming a unified opinion and creating an image of a certain political leader. Besides, there were a large number of military metaphors that are related to the historical events of 2023. It is found that political metaphors are an important tool for creating apt, unique images and emotional connection with the audience.

The results of the study can be used in analyzing processes occurring in modern political discourse, studying the influence of metaphors on the audience’s consciousness.
