Abstract. This article focuses on the study of the earliest translations of M. Y. Lermontov’s works into Chinese at the beginning of the 20th century. The issues of the first translations of M. Y Lermontov’s works in China have already been raised in literary studies. However, during the research process, discrepancies were discovered between the positions of Russian and Chinese scholars. This article examines two of the earliest translations of Lermontov’s works: the novella Bela (translated via an intermediary language), titled Yin Niu Bei (银钮碑,1907) and the poem Three Palm Trees (1909), translated by the sinologist V. M. Alekseev in collaboration with Wang Anlan (王安澜) and Liu Daben (刘大本). The article also raises the question of the early origins of Lermontov studies in China.

Keywords: Bela, V. M. Alekseev, Lermontov’s studies, M. Y. Lermontov, Three Palms Trees, poetic translation.
