Regional German press on Poland’s anti-Semitic policies (1933–1939)

Abstract
No European country had such a high percentage of Jews among the local population as Poland, where they made up 10% of the total population. Since the re-establishment of the Polish independent state, the Jewish population was forced to fight for their economic and political rights in the newly created nation. During the interwar period, antisemitism intensified in Poland, which was promoted by nationalist parties and groups, and since the second half of the 1930s, the so-called Sanation movement sought to adopt laws aimed at limiting both economic and political rights of Polish Jews and creating conditions for their mass emigration from the country. In the present article, based on the use of materials from German periodicals, the author considers issues related to the solution of the “Jewish issue” in interwar Poland. It should be noted that the use of materials and publications from German periodicals of this period contributes to the formation of clear-phrased ideas about the development of Polish anti-Semitism in this period. Basing on publications in regional periodicals, it is possible to trace the main points of the attitude of Western European powers to the Jewish issue that arose in Poland after the independence. The author of the article reviews publications of German regional press for 1936–1937, that is, during the period when the situation of the Jewish population in Poland became more complicated. The research also sheds light on the so-called “Madagascar Plan” and the positions of Poland and France towards it.
