“Save me, o Lord!” On language and style of 21st-century monastic prose (based on the book of a Valaam herdsman)

Abstract
The article is devoted to the historical, cultural and philological comprehension of the phenomenon of monastic prose of the 21stcentury. The author uses the example of monk Abraham’s book Once upon a time. Diary of a Valaam herdsman (St. Petersburg, 2024) and characterizes the main features of modern Orthodox fiction and documentary literature: confessionalism, piety, historicity, psychologism, dialogue mode, expressiveness, correlation of the plot and characters with real events and names, special metaphoricity, numerous spiritual images and reminiscences. It is noted that previously essays on the Valaam Monastery were created by the greatest writers, such as I. S. Shmelyov, N. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, B. K. Zaytsev, whose artistic tradition continues in the 21st century. The author analyzes the individual author’s details of the work and the linguistic features of the diary: intertextuality, precedent symbols, a zoonymic code of the text, high and low, and the stylistic contrasts of this prose in general, etc. The author’s desire to tell in detail about the everyday fact of life on Valaam Island, to draw individual speech portraits using artistic and visual means and to recreate authentic communicative situations is emphasized. The article highlights the expressiveness of the text, which is created through the use of oral everyday speech and colloquial vocabulary, slang, religious intertext and philosophical associations. Attention is drawn to the verbal details used by the author to characterize the personality of monk George and the psychology in describing the narrator’s conflicts with this hero. A characteristic feature of the analyzed work is its intermediality, achieved by creating a special style of the text. The inclusion of illustrations (unusual for religious discourse in the outline of the plot) expands the semiotic field of spiritual prose — a figurative and semantic language arises. The conclusion is made about the originality of the author’s style, the concise visualization characters and circumstances, artistic expression and the metatextual effect of Orthodox literature. The practical significance of the article lies in the necessity of classroom studies of the language and style of modern fiction as a reflection of typical and individual authorial properties in the context of literary and language tradition, both in secondary and higher school.
