Abstract
The article examines inversion as a figurative and expressive device, a means of actual division, and a way of rhythmic and melodic organization in a poem. It notes the following features of Yesenin’s word order: preposition of the word being defined, break between the principal members of a sentence and insertion of a group of secondary members between the subject and the predicate, use of negation at the beginning of a line, further reinforced by verb gradation. In most cases, S. Yesenin poet used inversion to give his speech discourse a conversational quality. The indirect word order in S. Yesenin’s poetry is also influenced by the folk poetic tradition and the Ryazan folklore motifs that shaped the poet’s upbringing. Inversion plays a crucial role in enhancing the expressiveness of both a phrase and the overall rhythmic and melodic structure of poetic speech.
