Cooperation practices between urban and rural Pioneer squads as a Soviet tool for modernization of village life (in Ryazan Province in 1925-1926)
AbstractBased on a comprehensive analysis of archival materials and periodicals from the Ryazan Province, the article examines the practices of organizing interaction (bonding, or smychka) between urban and rural pioneer groups as a technology for enhancing urban behavior patterns, cultural practices and ideological attitudes into the peasant environment. The specific methods of cooperation, the reaction of the peasantry, the practical results and the systemic problems of this interaction are analyzed in detail. The paper introduces new archival data into scholarly circulation, reconstructing the mechanisms of cultural transformation in Soviet modernization in the 1920s. It is concluded that the bonding was an important element of the modernization strategy aimed at bridging the socio-cultural gap between the city and the countryside through linking active children’s groups.
